There’s loads to get involved in when you’re living on campus at UWA. With friends at your doorstep and events on almost every week at UniHall or UWA, your time in Perth can be so fun you may not want to go home (…maybe). Take a look below at what a typical year at UniHall looks like.
A couple of things to know before we dive in:
You’ll move into UniHall one week before classes start to help you get settled into your new home.
We call this week Welcome Week, and it’s packed full of events that support you to get to know other new residents, as well as the Perth community, before you need to hit the books for the year.
Welcome Day is the official date that residents can move into UniHall for the year.
As a new resident – it’s the day we welcome you into our community! You’ll join others in finding your room, meeting other new residents as well as the Residential Advisor team and staff that support you in your time here at UniHall.
You can expect a few formalities like a formal introduction into UniHall and a community dinner together with your family, but we cap it off with a bunch of fun intro sessions run by our student Residents Club Committee (ResClub).
And, you’re not alone! You’ll also see some returning residents move back into UniHall on this day.
Welcome Week follows your Welcome Day, and is your chance to make new friends as you explore the UniHall, UWA and wider Perth community.
You’ll attend a range of events in Welcome Week including:
One of the most anticipated events you can be part of in Welcome Week is the Fresher Festival, held on the Friday by the UWA Student Guild’s Residential Students' Department (the UWA Student Guild’s committee who represents and advocates for the needs of students living on campus at UWA). All colleges head down to Matilda Bay to battle for the winner’s title. It’s lots of fun and you’ll feel a huge sense of comradery.
You’ll also notice more returning residents start to move back into their rooms as the start of classes draws nearer. Our community begins to grow ahead of Residents’ Week, next week.
UWA O Week happens at the same time, and there will be some info sessions specific to your degree that you may want or need to attend. Don’t worry, this is accounted for alongside UniHall Welcome Week events so you don’t miss out!
Instead of having 4 terms like in school, unis have 2 semesters each year (or 3 trimesters and more!). Most new students going into uni after school will study their degrees in a semester timetable.
Alongside your classes, there's loads of events that you can get involved in each week. Some of the larger events are listed below, but you'll find that at UniHall, many events are planned and run by student committees, which is why they're not listed here yet.
The key thing to know is that there are lots of things to do to stop you from being bored! And, at UniHall you're free to choose what you want to attend, and when. So whether you're feeling up for week of events, learning and socialising in our community, or whether you need some me-time to chill, it's your choice about what works best for you at the time.
Semester 1 kicks off with Week 1. Let your uni journey begin!
You’ll get a break from classes with the Easter Long weekend, immediately followed by a Study Break (tuition free week).
This is your personal time, and you get to choose what you do with it! Maybe you’ll take this opportunity to head home for a short break – many students do this to spend time with family for Easter.
You might even join some friends on a short trip to somewhere in Perth. Or maybe you’ll stay around UniHall and catch up on your studies (or sleep…).
International Night is a much loved UniHall event that celebrates our diverse, multicultural community.
This is an event you don’t want to miss! It’s free for all residents where ou’ll be treated to amazing entertainment (including some by fellow residents), a three course meal, and loads of fun with your UniHall mates. Plus there’s the annual flag presentation, where the flags of all nationalities represented among the UniHall student base are presented by students on stage.
You’ve almost made it through your first semester. Classes are finished for the semester, and you have this week to brush up, revise and get ready for exams which start on the Saturday.
UniHall turns into a study support haven, with stressbuster events designed to help you take time to unwind and give you mental break, as well as becoming a quiet campus for the study and exam periods. You’ve got this!
2 weeks of exams kick off, and hopefully you’ve scored a good exam timetable!
UniHall continues to be a quiet campus, and will run stress buster events run up until the evening after the last scheduled exam has finished.
You’ve got a chunk of time off before Semester 2 starts. Your rental lease includes the mid year break, so you can use this time to do whatever you want with the confidence that your room is yours for the entire duration.
Some residents will head off on road trips, some will head home, and others will take time to explore Perth a little more.
In the last week of the break, you’ll see a bunch of new faces, as new residents move into UniHall to start their own uni journey in Semester 2. You’re not the newest residents anymore!
Semester 2 means it's time to get back into study mode.
But it's not a straight repeat of Semester 1. You will see some events returning this semester (like Residents' Week), but there's a few new (and highly anticipated) events to look forward to as well.
Ready to go again? Semester 2 starts and the UniHall community is looking full and vibrant once more.
You’re on the homeward stretch and it's time for a break from classes.
As with other study breaks, your room stays your room and you can decide how you spend your break: stuyding/sleeping/travelling/churning out those assignments?
After a more than 7 months together at UniHall, the end of the academic year is drawing closer. This also means that it’s getting closer to the date that residents move out of UniHall for the year.
To celebrate year that was as a community, we host the annual Farewell Event, filled with amazing food, wonderful entertainment, good music and loads of fun. The annual UniHall awards are also presented as we look back on a wonderful year. It’s your chance to enjoy a night with friends before exams begin, and some of them starting to head home.
Classes for the semester have finished, and now’s the time to study for the final exams of the year.
Stressbusters will be back to give you a much needed rest from the intensity of exam study, as well as our commitment to supporting you by making UniHall a quiet campus for the study and exam periods.
The countdown is officially on! Your exams are here, and your holidays are only a few weeks away.
Our quiet campus will help you focus during study times, and stressbusters will help you chill out for much needed down time. As with Semester 1, UniHall is a quiet campus until the evening of the last scheduled UWA exam.
Yes! Bring on a few months of holidays living your best life.
Your holidays start from your last exam and your free time is yours to enjoy.
From Monday 11 November, you’re officially your uni break, but you’ll be able to stay in your room until your lease end date (in November if you’re in a standard room, or December if you’re in a studio room).
You may notice that UniHall gets a little quieter as residents depart on holidays or head home earlier than the date that their lease ends.
If you’re living in a Standard room (most new residents to UniHall are), this is your official lease end date; and you'll need to make plans to move out by 10am on Monday 18 Nov (unless you’ve made other arrangements with us).
You’ll get all the info you need to know before the big move. We’ll be sad to see you go for the year and will look forward to welcoming you back in the following Feb!
If you’re living in a Studio room type, you’re official lease end date is in December.
Again, you’ll get all the info you need to know before you need to move out of Hall. Our countdown begins until next Feb when you and the rest of our community is back together again!
