The Unlikely Path to Passion: Aadhi Ramkumar's Journey in Biological Science

From a student unsure of his future to a budding researcher in the field of zoology, Aadhikesav “Aadhi” Ramkumar’s journey at The University of Western Australia (UWA) has been nothing short of transformative. Originally from India, Aadhi came to UWA with no clear direction for his degree, but over the course of five years, his passion for biological science has not only flourished but solidified into a career path he never imagined.

What began as a straightforward Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 2022, followed by a Master of Biological Science in 2024, has blossomed into an academic path that has captivated his interests in ways he never expected. “I didn’t know what drew me to this degree in the first place, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Aadhi says, reflecting on his time spent watching flies’ mate as part of his research on sexual selection. As he wraps up his master’s degree with distinction, Aadhi is poised to continue his research with a PhD project on seed beetles in 2025. “I know it sounds like I’m obsessed with watching insects mate, but honestly, there’s still so much to learn, and I’m excited to keep exploring,” he laughs.

During his time at UWA, Aadhi also embraced many opportunities to build connections and contribute to the community. Living at UniHall for three years from 2020 to 2023, Aadhi found a supportive and vibrant home away from home. The tight-knit, multicultural environment at UniHall gave him the chance to meet people from all over the world, many of whom have become lifelong friends. “I met some of the most special people of my life at UniHall—friends who have basically become family,” Aadhi says, adding that the friendships made during the COVID-19 pandemic were especially meaningful. “Having my closest friends just a hop away was invaluable during those challenging times.”

Aadhi’s time at UniHall was also marked by leadership roles, where he not only grew personally but helped foster a sense of community among his peers. From being a Floor RA to Lead RA, his involvement in the residential advisor program allowed him to support others, while his leadership as Vice President of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee in 2023 demonstrated his commitment to creating an inclusive environment. His volunteer work as a website designer at Sites4Good further showcased his desire to make a positive impact.

Looking back, Aadhi offers a wealth of advice for current and future students. “The best advice I can give is to get out there and meet new people. It might be intimidating at first, but UniHall offers an environment that makes it a whole lot easier,” he says. Aadhi also encourages students to seize every opportunity for work experience, emphasizing the valuable skills it can provide for future career prospects. And for those who prefer to explore on their own, he suggests taking a bike ride through UWA’s stunning surroundings, from Matilda Bay to Kings Park. “University isn’t forever and neither is being in college, so make the most of your time there!” he adds.

Now, as he looks toward his PhD and an exciting future in biological science, Aadhi remains grateful for the experiences and people who have shaped his journey. “I’m incredibly thankful to my project supervisors Robert Dugand, Jason Kennington, and Joseph Tomkins, who have been not just mentors, but reminders of why I love this field.”

For Aadhi, the journey is far from over, and he’s eager to continue exploring the fascinating world of sexual selection. “There’s still so much to learn,” he says with enthusiasm. “I can’t wait to see where this path takes me.”
