Humble Hero with a Vision for Public Health

Ronan Cameron is a dedicated fourth-year student at the University of Western Australia, set to graduate at the end of 2024 with a double major in Law and Society and Economics. His honours research focuses on the impact of junk food advertising policy on public health in Australia. Ronan’s commitment to making a difference in the public health system reflects his broader ambition to create positive change through policy and advocacy.

Since 2022, Ronan has been a resident at Unihall, where he appreciates the prime location near UWA, the Swan River, Kings Park, and the Perth CBD. This advantageous setting has afforded him a lifestyle that many find unattainable. At Unihall, he has valued the opportunities for personal growth and the development of leadership and soft skills, crucial for his future career.

Ronan’s journey at Unihall began with his involvement in the Academic Advancement Committee, a role he describes as a pivotal step toward his current leadership position. His passion for the visual aspects of website creation led him to join the Sites4Good program, a registered not-for-profit organization that builds websites for charities and non-profits.

Over the past three years, Ronan has advanced from a designer to a mentor, and now, as the Program Director and Residential Advisor, he manages a team of around 15 students each semester. His work has included client engagement, marketing, event management, and workforce recruitment. Utilising the Wix platform and supported by Unleash Design’s weekly workshops, Ronan has contributed to and overseen over 20 websites, many of which focus on pressing social causes like homelessness and animal welfare. The annual showcase hosted by the program is a highlight, offering an opportunity to celebrate their work and the impactful organisations they support.

Among his cherished memories at Unihall are the ResClub Ball, End of Year Awards, and Commencement Dinners, all of which create special, lasting moments. Ronan finds joy in meeting and supporting new residents each semester, though he acknowledges the bittersweet aspect of friends moving on as they graduate.

His advice to new residents is to seize every opportunity, follow their passions, and fully embrace the lifestyle at Unihall. Balancing academics with internships and building a professional network is also crucial. After graduation, Ronan plans to pursue a Master’s in Public Health, following a well-deserved vacation to Japan.

Ronan Cameron’s journey is a testament to his dedication to public health and his proactive approach to making a meaningful impact through both his studies and extracurricular activities.
