Yesterday marked a wonderful moment of connection, sustainability, and community spirit as we came together for our Community Garden Planting Day—an event proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through a Get Waste Sorted grant, and part of the UWA Grand Challenges program.
The day began with creativity and colour, as the Environment Committee led a fun and inclusive pot painting and planting activity. It was the perfect way to warm up and set the tone for the afternoon ahead. With brushes, soil, and smiles in hand, everyone got involved, giving their green thumbs a workout and creating beautiful pots and a water-saving succulent to add to their room.
As the afternoon started to cool, the energy shifted to the main event: planting! With the help of members from both the Environment Committee and the Sports & Leisure Committee, as well as our dedicated Community Advocates, we planted seven raised garden beds brimming with a variety of fruit, vegetables, and herbs. These garden beds are more than just patches of green—they’re a living invitation for everyone in our community to share, nurture, and benefit from what we grow together.
More than just a gardening day, this event promoted mental health, physical wellbeing, and the joy of being outdoors together. There’s something powerful about getting your hands in the dirt, chatting with neighbours, and watching something grow—especially when it’s done side by side.
We’re excited to see how this garden blossoms over the coming months, and we welcome everyone to take part in looking after it, harvesting what they need, and enjoying the space.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and to our supporters for helping us sow the seeds of a healthier, more connected community.
